Slot Intelligence Series / Vol. VI

Quick Hit

A technical and mathematical review of the Bally scatter franchise Light & Wonder still sells after twenty-seven years — thirteen math chassis behind one symbol, the franchise's only published trigger rates, on two builds, the max-bet gate, manufacturer return menus from 87% to 96.89%, the regulator's jackpot record, and the channels from a 2001 tribal lottery license to Virginia historical racing.

Executive summary

Quick Hit is the oldest franchise in this series. Bally Gaming claims first use of the QUICK HIT mark on slot machines on September 21, 1999, in three live federal registrations; a 2001 license to Multimedia Games already lists "QUICK HITS" among Bally's titles; a California tribal casino named it a "guest favorite" in its 2005 annual report; and Bally's 2008 annual report sells Quick Hit Platinum as a participation game. Scientific Games bought Bally in 2014 and renamed itself Light & Wonder in 2022, and in September 2024 Light & Wonder still named "stepper favorites QUICK HIT™ and TRIPLE BLAZING 7s™" among the franchises underpinning its game performance. The brand runs on land Class III floors; in regulated online casinos in five U.S. states, Ontario, Québec and Atlantic Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe; on historical-racing floors in Kentucky and Virginia; and in a social casino app that set sixteen consecutive quarterly revenue records.

Quick Hit is a feature, not a game. What every title shares is a scatter symbol whose count pays a rising ladder. Behind it sit thirteen structurally different math chassis: a three-reel one-line stepper, a nine-line online stepper, five-reel mechanical games, the Super Wheel steppers, thirty-line Platinum video, forty-line Pro, wheel video, the expanding Blitz ladder, two unrelated any-way engines that share the name Ultra Pays, the three-pot Quick Hit Link, the hold-and-spin Ultra Link and two crossovers onto other franchises' engines (Table 1.1). The same title name can hide two games. Light & Wonder's land Ultra Pays – Monkey's Fortune pays 10× and 40× the total bet for three and four Quick Hits on 243 ways; the online Monkey's Fortune pays 1× and 3× on a curtain that opens 7,776 ways, and it ships in two certified builds that return 96.89% and 94.00%.6,8,28 Two builds publish trigger rates, and each prices a different part of the ladder. A Bally specification block for the ALPHA 2 Pro Stepper Quick Hit Double Jackpot Triple Blazing 7s gives the ten-thousand-credit top award once in 227,556 plays, the thousand-credit progressive once in 3,413 and a hit frequency of 32.85%.14 At the recommended two-credit configuration those two awards carry 16.85 points of return at the progressive's reset, and 87% of that sits in the smaller, more frequent award. Light & Wonder's own land catalog adds a third rate, on a second build: nine Quick Hits on the land Ultra Pays "occurs on average every 1,000,740 plays," and pays 1,500× the total bet below maximum bet, worth 0.15 of a point of return. Appendix B shows both calculations.

The max-bet gate is written into the manufacturer's copy. On the Platinum, Blitz, Super Wheel and land Ultra Pays pages the upper rungs pay "multipliers, or at max bet, progressive jackpots"; the land Ultra Pays pays 100× to 1,500× below maximum bet "and at max bet award 1 of 5 Quick Hit jackpots." Other gates are set in credits or by denomination: a 15-credit bonus bet on Super Wheel Deluxe, a 75-credit required bonus bet on Quick Hit Link, and a Cash Falls coin lock that works only at 5¢ and 10¢.10,13,30 The land catalog's eleven SKUs run on eight different structures, from 25 to 50 lines and 243 ways, with maximum bets from 300 to 1,000 credits.

Returns are published for online builds only, and they are menus. Light & Wonder's catalog and help files give nineteen return figures for ten online titles, from 87% on one build of the online stepper to 96.89% on the Rising Wheel builds of Ultra Pays; Quick Hit Platinum's online build 500090, released October 5, 2017, returns 94.06%.15,16,31 Two firstparty sources disagree about Wolf Mountain, 96.89% against 96.02%. No land-based return has been published for any Quick Hit title.

The regulator's record corroborates the paytable. New Jersey's annual Atlantic City jackpot lists name 38 Quick Hit awards from 2015 to 2025, the largest $581,331.40 on a land Quick Hit Super Wheel Wild Red at Hard Rock Atlantic City on October 31, 2024. Eleven land awards are exactly $50,000 at the $5 denomination — 10,000 credits, the stepper's top award — and one is $50,000 at $10, the 5,000-credit configuration a forum poster reported. Nothing on any Quick Hit cabinet is a bounded counter that can be played for value: the stepper meter is a standard progressive whose height changes what its award is worth, never how soon it comes, and the Link firecrackers that fill above the reels are perceived progression — "perceived persistence," in Light & Wonder's own catalog — so a full one is exactly as far from a bonus as an empty one.

What the volume covers

Section 1 is the orientation: thirteen chassis behind one scatter symbol, and the channels each one reaches. Sections 2 and 3 cover the dated record — Bally from 1932 to Light & Wonder, who owns the Bally name, the origin evidence from 1999, the trademark file and the cabinets. Section 4 is the mechanical core: the scatter, the ladders, the gate, the curtain and every free-game design. Section 5 is the mathematics: the published trigger rates and what they price, the complete online rules, the return menus and a register of the bad figures in circulation. Section 6 is the census. Sections 7 through 10 cover jackpots and the payout record, denominations and credit gates, market position and the social app, and regulatory class and channel. Appendix A grades every source; Appendix B shows every calculation; Appendix C is the persistent-state register, and §C.2 classifies every display that looks like progress.
