Slot Intelligence Series / Vol. XIII

Phoenix Link

A technical and mathematical review of Aristocrat Gaming's Phoenix Link — the declared follow-up to Dragon Link, announced on September 25, 2024, two days after a federal court pulled its rival's Dragon Train from the market: four themes on one Hold & Spin engine, a Phoenix counter its maker calls "hit-by" and players read to a ceiling of 1,888, double and triple jackpots on a single symbol, a Grand that scales with the denomination, $1 million and $5 million links on the Las Vegas Strip, and a jackpot system it now shares with Dragon Link in Australia.

Executive summary

Phoenix Link is Dragon Link's successor, sold as its opposite. Aristocrat announced it on September 25, 2024 as "a follow-up to the international hit game, Dragon Link," its product chief calling the two "the 'Yin' and 'Yang' to each other"; it premiered in Aristocrat's booth at G2E that October on the Neptune Single cabinet, and Yaamava' Resort & Casino in California hosted the first floor, announced on October 30.1,13 The timing was noticed. A federal court had enjoined Light & Wonder's Dragon Train two days earlier, and an analyst wrote that the rollout's timing "could not be better". The name is older than the game: PHOENIX LINK was filed in Australia on August 20, 2020 and in the United States on September 1, 2020, and the four theme names were filed between April 2020 and September 2023.

The maker prints the features, not the mathematics. The four themes — Confucius Say, General Tso, Queen Chiu and Sensei Master — share one engine: five reels of three rows, six Phoenix symbols to trigger Hold & Spin on fifteen positions, SIS 26-PL · Phoenix Link a second start when the first three respins land nothing, and six free games in one of two designs, Twin Spins or 2× wilds. No return, hit frequency, trigger rate, paytable or jackpot seed is published for any build in any channel. The only return figures in circulation — "RTP 96.00%" and "RTP: 87%-95%," printed on the same review page — cite nothing. Aristocrat has defended the math of this engine as a trade secret, and Light & Wonder paid US$127.5 million to settle over it (Volume VII).

The Phoenix counter is a must-hit-by meter, and the maker says so without printing the number. Every Phoenix symbol that lands "increment[s] towards a counter with chances to trigger a free Hold & Spin," and the family page calls it "the mystery hit-by Phoenix Counter." Practitioners read its ceiling off the machine as 1,888 — 88 above Buffalo Link's 1,800 — and report that it resets to a random value between 100 and 1,500, climbs about 1.1 a spin and always awards the Hold & Spin. An Aristocrat patent describes a counter that works the same way — a starting value drawn at random, a trigger point drawn at random between it and a displayed ceiling, and the trigger point kept hidden — though no source ties the patent to the game. On that design, with the trigger point spread evenly — an assumption no source confirms — a counter reading C has (1,888 − C) ÷ 2 Phoenix symbols to go on average: 194 at 1,500 and 44 at 1,800. This is true persistent state, the one kind of display in the series that says how soon, not only how long, and it is why the game has an advantage-play market and one well-known ejection attached to it.

The jackpots scale where Dragon Link's did not. "The ultimate prize of a Grand progressive scales with higher denominations," and one symbol can carry a double or triple Mini, Minor or Major — "double & triple Progressives," in the maker's words. A $250 Queen Chiu spin at $2 won $118,597.20 at Seminole Classic Casino, after which "the progressive" reset to $100,000; a $1 Million version opened at Wynn Las Vegas in October 2025; The Cosmopolitan paired Phoenix Link with Lightning 10 Year Storm on a $5 million link in July 2026; and 17 casinos in Puerto Rico share it on the Jackpot del Encanto link, seeded at $40,000.23,9,24,25 In the Australian Capital Territory the "Phoenix Link - Grand" builds run on a jackpot system named "Dragon & Phoenix Link Grand," shared with Dragon Link's own Grand builds.

New Jersey's list is the regulator's record of what the game pays. Atlantic City's list of jackpots above $40,000 names Phoenix Link 55 times between January 1 and August 30, 2026 — $4,643,378.63 in all, at six casinos, 30 of the awards at Borgata — against 257 for Dragon Link over the list's full run to September 12. The largest is $403,018.76, on a $25 Confucius Say game at Borgata on August 9, 2026; none was won online, and the count climbs from two in January to fifteen in August.

The market has already moved to it. Eilers-Fantini ranked all four themes in the top seven new premium leased games in January 2025, reported Queen Chiu overtaking Dragon Link – Golden Century as the top overall premium leased game in its U.S. report of September 2026, and had the family sweeping the top three premium ranks in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in August 2026. The game was Slot of the Year at the Global Gaming Awards Americas in October 2025 and top new premium game at the EKG Slot Awards in February 2026. It is sold on land only: no Class II, historical-racing or real-money online build was found, and it can be played for free in Aristocrat's social apps.

What the volume covers

Section 1 is the orientation: one maker, one engine, four themes, two free-game designs, one counter and the links the Grand rides on, and where each is documented. In this volume Phoenix Link is the family; a theme is one of its four titles; a Phoenix symbol is the flaming credit symbol that plays the part of Dragon Link's Orb; the counter is the collection meter the maker calls the "Phoenix Mystery" feature in its releases and the "Phoenix Free Feature" on its pages; the feature is Hold & Spin; and Phoenix Cash is the stand-alone twin. Section 2 is the dated record — the marks filed in 2020, the announcement two days after the Dragon Train injunction, the floors, the high-limit links and Australia — with the trademark register and the patents; Section 3 is the cabinets. Section 4 is the mechanical core: the grid, the Phoenix symbol, Hold & Spin and its second start, the counter, the double and triple jackpots and the free games. Section 5 is the mathematics: what is published, the return figures in circulation, the counter's arithmetic and a register of the bad figures. Section 6 is the census. Sections 7 through 10 cover the jackpots and New Jersey's record of them, the bets, the market and the channels. Appendix A grades the sources, Appendix B shows every calculation, and Appendix C answers the persistent-state question.
